The Bicycle Library comes to Hackney

The Bicycle Library, a mobile library advocating bicycles in the city, has migrated to London Fields for the Winter. The Bicycle Library is a decommissioned London double decker bus, stocked with bicycles, books and much more.

On the first floor visitors can enjoy a cup of tea whilst perusing through a host of sustainably sourced bicycle wear and accessories from the TWOnFRO range. Ascending to the second floor, visitors will find a well-stocked literary archive as well as a range of bikes that can be borrowed as you would a book. The Bicycle Library also doubles as an art gallery and cinema. Artwork is displayed on both floors and cinema screenings are set to take place on the second floor in the coming months.

Librarians are there to assist you with any questions, which are answered via their expertise, as well as the books and magazines in the reference library, which is a complete selection of all the best books on bicycle design, culture and history. There is also a set of IPads to browse all of our bookmarked cycling websites, which are organized according to the 7 sub categories of bikes we advocate for the city.

There is nothing worse than setting off on your bike on a crisp winters morning only to find 2 mins in that your hands are freezing, turning the rest of the journey into a battle against frost-bite. Even when wearing gloves the cold wind can blast through them and you find yourself trying to breath life into your hands at every traffic light stop. This has long since been a problem of mine so this year I was determined to find some gloves to nip this in the bud. After much searching we have found a solution in these stupidly warm Sheepskin Gloves £24.99, handmade in Glastonbury .

This poster was designed by husband and wife team Britt and Wayne Hanson who together write the blog Fantastic Family Fun. Wayne was knocked off his bike by a van and wearing a helmet saved his life so the couple are understandably passionate and spreading the pro helmet word. The couple have noticed they often see adults carrying children on their bike and whilst the wee ones are safely helmeted up, the adult is not.
So why is this? I think sometime as parents we are so consumed with our child's well-being and all the associated bits and bobs that we spend less time thinking of our own. But of course the safety of our own heads is just as important to our little ones....

It's that time of year again when thousands of school leavers, pack their bedrooms into the back of their parents cars and head off to a random city for 3 years studying and partying.

Dawn Porter hauls her cookies from London to Paris by Bike!

TV Presenter and old uni chum of mine, Dawn Porter, took on the huge challenge of cycling from London to Paris last week. Despite severe saddle sore, she made it and we were only too happy to kit her out with a helmet and panniers to help her complete the mammoth ride in style.

Dawn was not just doing the ride to tone her thighs, she was raising money for a charity dear to her heart, Breast Cancer Care. So in keeping with the pink theme we sent her Sawako Furuno Ribbon Helmet in Rose and two Pink Maripopas Panniers.

My ASOS Autumn Essentials

Well there's no doubt about it, Autumn is well and truly here so time to start dressing accordingly on the bike. I have to admit to having a helping hand with my new autumn cycling attire from the lovely people as ASOS who gave me a £150 voucher to spend at my leisure, thanks ASOS. So what did I pick out?

I decided to go for an autumnal heritage look with Midi length Rain Mac, Pussybow shift dress and Cloche hat. The rainmac is ideal for cycling as its lightweight and the midi length keeps my legs dry. The chic shift dress also works well on the bike as it's a breathable fabric that doesnt cling and the cloche hat gives dash of vintage flair as well as keeping my locks protected from the blustery weather.
But it's not just about weathering the storms, it's important your autumn look works both on and off the bike which is where this outfit comes into it's own. The Chic 1940's look is perfect for jumping off the bike and heading into a London pub for an after work drink with friends.

Pedaling Picnic Perfection

Floral fun this weekend!

Fancy doing something different this bank holiday weekend, why not pop down to the Southbank and join the Floral bike parade.

The floral bicycle parade is part of Southbank Centre’s Weekend 51 (26th-28th August), a weekend looking back at the 1951 Festival of Britain. Sunday’s events are in partnership with the Mayor’s Story of London festival, which has been curated by the Museum of London, and pay homage to community involvement in 1951 when many outer London boroughs took part with a wide variety of celebratory events. Local museums in five of the original participating boroughs – Dagenham, Brent, Haringey, Redbridge and Wandsworth – are hosting displays in their boroughs and recreating some of the activities that took place.
Cyclists are invited to recreate the floral bicycle parade of the Festival of Britain by decorating their bikes, helmets and clothes for a grand parade around Southbank Centre.

The original parade took place in Haringey, and so Haringey cyclists will be leading the parade on the 28th. Decorating stations will be open on site from 2pm for any last minute touches, and the parade begins at 4pm at Southbank Centre Square Doors.

As a big fan of second hand bikes I am delighted to have Going Going Bike write a guest post for us imparting their knowledge on buying a vintage ladies bicycle.

Buying a second hand bicycle is really satisfying. Such a bicycle gives so much better value than a new bike. A new bicycle can lose as much as 50% of their value the moment they leave the shop.

Buying a used bike also appeals because it is sustainable and, if you choose a vintage bike, results in you getting a bike with some classic, retro appeal. It is worth noting that buying a vintage bicycle is also often a better idea than buying a new low-cost modern bicycle.

Golden age of bikes

The golden era for vintage women’s bikes is from the late 1950s onwards. Such bikes are still very rideable and still provide much of the basic design elements used in modern versions of women’s bikes. As a rule any bike that was built from the late-1950s to mid-1980s is considered as being very collectable. With most bikes from that period you are still able to find suitable components if you need to make repairs or restore them.

Bike types

Women’s bikes on the vintage scene are split into two types. More commonly seen is the Mixtie frame bike. The Mixtie is essentially a light utility road bike for women with some even coming with dropdown handlebars. Mixtie frames can be easily converted to single speeds making them very sought after particularly with the single speed/fixed gear craze. 70s and 80s Raleigh and Peugeot bikes are good brands to look out for if you purchase a Mixtie due to the ease of finding suitable component replacements or adding newer more modern components.

Town/Dutch/utility vintage bikes are much the modern vogue and there is a clutch of manufacturers offering new bikes in this market. Sadly many of the old UK brands such as BSA no long exist as do bikes from this period. Pashley still operates in this market with its modern interpretations of its classic bikes of the past but finding a classic vintage model is hard to find. More prevalent are brands from the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden.

Where to buy

The women’s second hand market is seeing a bit of a renaissance with more women now cycling. Apart from sources such as Going Going Bike (click here for our vintage category), there are the usual places such as eBay and Gumtree. Markets are also a good idea. A new business, The Bike Spoke, which specialises in Vintage bikes, recently sold all its vintage ladies bikes stock at the Hackney Homemade market. In each case, given the nature of it being an old bike, it is actually going to inspect the bike before you buy. Pricing can be very difficult to determine but you generally get a feel for what a bike is worth by looking online or going to bike markets.

Once you had decided on a bike, we have some basic guidelines on buying a second hand bike.

Check the bike’s condition

Second-hand bikes come in all sorts of conditions and it is worth noting specific things to look out for when it comes to vintage bikes.

Always inspect the state of the brakes, derailleur system, headset, wheel spokes, hubs and whether the frame itself is structurally sound. Superficial marks or scratches on a frame shouldn’t be a problem, but avoid a frame or fork that is bent, dented or cracked. Similarly if there is rust on the frame, scratch with a finger nail to see how deep it is. Also look out for rusty worn chains and cogs.

Be prepared to pay for certain repairs or updates to a vintage bike. It is important to factor this into the purchasing price when buying.

Size is key

When it comes to a vintage bike, the actual size of the bike is of less of an importance given the step through nature of the bike frame. What is important to note though is that the feel rider has a comfortable upright riding position, whereby they can reach the handlebars without stretching unduly. Best fit should therefore be determined by arm reach Women have shorter arms but longer legs relative to men so bear this in mind when choosing the right sizes bike. Typically vintage frames are measured in inches as opposed to centimetres with sizes going up from 17.5 inches to 22 inches typically. For a good fit, measure your inside leg measurement and as a general guide compare this against the following measurements:

A 17.5 inches frame will fit a lady with a 24,5"-28,5" inside leg measurement

A 20 inch frame will fit a lady with a 27"-31,5" inside leg measurement

A 22 inch frame will fit a lady with a 30,5"-38 inside leg measurement

Ask questions of the seller

Find out how long the seller owned the bike or if the bike has any problems in the past. Has the bike been stored indoors in the dry, or outside in the damp? If you’re buying the bike from a second-hand bike store you may be able to get a warranty for any problems the bike may develop in the first few months.

Last month we launched a competition with Vintage Brighton to find a deserved vintage bike for one of our delightful vintage box bags.
The winner is the rather splendid Sir Walter Raleigh and his owner Raevennan Husbands. Here's their story...

"This photo was taken on the day I found my beloved bike in a skip behind my house. The back wheel had a rusted lock on it – it took quite a battle with the pliers to get that off…
But he’s doing well now. I showed it some TLC – replaced gears and brakes and saddle and a loud ding-dong bell – and sprayed it with clear lacquer to preserve the shabby-chic look.
I discovered what was an original Brookes saddle when I took the strange tartan thing off, but unfortunately it got damaged at uni and I had to find a cheap replacement.
Looking for similar models on the web, I found that the Tourist model cost £24 which would have been two months wages in 1957 – when mine was made.
I’ve named my trusty stead Sir Walter Shabby Raleigh and hope to keep him for as long as we both shall live. He even has his own Facebook page – Shabby’n'Chic Husbandes."

I am pleased to see a flurry of cool, interesting bikes making an appearance this spring. The first that have grabbed my attention are a partnership between Red or Dead and Raleigh. When I first started cyclechic.co.uk 3 years ago I managed to source some old stock of these iconic bags and they soon became firm favourite with customers as well as being featured in Fasion magazines from Vogue to The Times Style. However the stock soon ran out so to save disappointment we decided to bring these baby's back to life ourselves...

Charge Bikes have a new girls bike in their 2010 / 2011 line called the Hob. It's a pretty ground braking bike for women as it's a single speed bike which can be ridden either fixed or as a free wheel - but it's drop bar and sweep handle bars allow a relaxed sitting position - somewhere between riding a racer and a dutch bike.
Whats also interesting about this bike is the Mixte frame - where the top tube is replaced with two smaller tubes that run all the way to the rear axle. I saw quite a few Mixte's when I was in the US but you don't see too many over here. They have a functional elegance that I rather like.

Models at the Pedal Savvy Fashion Show

Last Saturday we excitedly hauled our cookies all the way to San Francisco to promote our US sister site The Bicycle Muse at the SF bike expo. The one day event was held at The Cow Palace, a huge venue just outside the city, where Elvis once played. He had left the building when we got there but a lot of people interested in bicycles had arrived!

There was a refreshingly underground feel to the event. It began it's life as a 'bike swap', where people show up with their bikes, parts etc and swap with other attendees. There is still a whole room dedicated to the bike swap but the event has now grown to a consumer and trade show for small, upcoming brands like ourselves to larger, established brand such as Nutcase.

We were given a warm welcome on the day and relished the opportunity to talk to customers. We had our full selection of products on display as well as showcasing some new exciting, stylish hi vis gear from Irish Brand Georgia in Dublin.

The Pedal Savvy Fashion show went down a storm and we were proud to have Meli from Bikes and the City modeling the wonderful YAKKAY helmets in Herringbone Paris working perfectly with her monochrome outfit.

See My Style, See My Disability

Here at Cyclechic we are big supporters of looking good on two wheels and this doesn't stop at bicycles... We are thrilled to be supporting the Disabled and Sexy charity fashion show happening in Notting Hill on 25th October. The show will feature models and work by designers who suffer from Muscular Astrophy in aid of the Jennifer Trust.

The show will use disabled and able bodied models, in an effort to prove that fashion is for everyone. Sophie Morgan, contestant on Britain’s Missing Next Top Model will be making a guest appearance in the show. The evening will be hosted by Jonathan Phang, who is highly respected in the fashion industry and was host of Britain’s Missing Next Top Model. Doug Henderson, Head of Fundraising commented “This is an amazing opportunity for our young people affected by SMA to make a real difference in the fashion world. All of us here at The Jennifer Trust are proud of the work that has gone into this project, and excited about the show itself”.

The Jennifer Trust is the leading national charity in the UK dedicated to supporting children and adults affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is a genetic neuromuscular condition which causes muscle weakness in varying degrees of severity. In its severest form, Type I SMA is the largest cause of genetic death in infants in the UK today, usually fatal before the second birthday. Children affected by Type II SMA will never walk, and rely on electrically powered wheelchairs to gain mobility and independence. Its officially Autumn. The leaves have started to fall there's a chill in the air and the evenings have stated to draw in. Its the end of carefree summer cycling and time to get yourself kitted out with lights and some reflective additions.
My lights of choice this year are a Knog Beetle for the front and a Knog Skink for the back. I'm a big fan of the Knog brand sightly bonkers but totally practical. City of London Cycle Style Event.. models required

I am loving that Erin O' Connor cycles. She has always been my favourite supermodel - not only does she look ridiculously elegant but she comes across as having an admirably down to earth attitude given the world she works in. Erin is one of the famous faces promoting the Skyride events this year and has been talking about her passion for bicycles. " One of my happiest cycling memories - apart from passing that cycling proficiency test - is racing at high speed along the canals of Birmingham with my friends. We'd also go to the BMX track. I'd ride my girly pink bike in my school uniform with a gigantic pink bow in my hair."

I had the pleasure of being invited to new brasserie restaurant, Cafe Luc, to test out the bike valet service... and of course the food.
The booking was for 7pm so I popped on a frock, jumped on my poppy and set off across London. I had a wonderful cycle ride through Kensington and Hyde park, passing the Royal Albert Hall and crossing over the Serpentine. A perfectly romantic start to the evening.

I arrived at Cafe Luc, located in one of my favourite London streets, the sophisticated Marleybone High street. The restaurant looked wonderfully inviting and as I perused the menu, a couple of smartly dressed and rather handsome chaps came out and offered to park my bike for me. How lovely. Instead of the usual hunting around for suitable bike parking then scrabbling around with my lock, I simply handed Poppy over and waltzed into the restaurant to meet my date. Cafe Luc have a secure indoor area where they store customers bikes while they dine at no extra charge, this is the the first bike valet service I've heard of in London and I think its a fabulous idea.

I won't pretend to be a restaurant critic but the food was scrummy. A fantastic selection of French and Mediterranean dishes, I had scallops to start and Red Mullet for my main, washed down with lovely Savingnon Blanc. The service was efficient and friendly but not intrusive and throughout the meal I was safe in the knowledge that my bike was parked safely and would be presented to me as I left.

The restaurant, which has only been open for 8 weeks and busy and bussling - some popping in for a quick bite after work and others sitting comfortably in the corner, taking their time over 3 courses and a couple of bottles of wine. The mains range from £12-28 but there is also a very reasonably priced set menu for £15 per person so it doesn't have to be expensive night out.
The bike valet service was a great added extra to what was a very enjoyable evening out. I will definitely be back. I am already suggesting it to my cycling friends as the perfect spot to meet for Sunday brunch and have it noted as a great place for a business lunch.
So after a smashing meal and an espresso to help me with the cycle home, we left the restaurant and I was reunited with my bicycle. Not only was this handy and hassle free but was a sophisticated end to glamorous Friday night out.

The London Cycle Hire scheme is here!

Hooray! today is the first official day of the London Cycle hire scheme for those who have registered. I set off on my virgin voyage from Old street station, cycled up to our warehouse and then docked it back in Shoreditch Park. Apart from a little panic at the funny noise it made at me when I docked it back in it was all plain sailing.

A few tips on getting started
1. Register - To be one of the first to get involved you need to register for an annual membership through TFL's website. It is fairly straight forward. You need to pay £45 and then an additional £3 for the key. I registered on Saturday and the key arrived promptly on Tues.
2. Activate - you need to either phone or go online to activate the key before you use it.

3. Find your nearest docking Stations - You get a map of all the Docking stations when you register, as long as you are in the catchment area there are lots of them and you can't miss them. Apparently there are a couple of good apps out there though for locating the docking stations.
4. Push key in - wait for green light and then pull out your bike.
5. Check the time - Your first half hour is free so its a really good idea to check the time just as you release the bike.
6. Helmet? - It entirely up to you if you wear a helmet or not. personally I prefer to wear a helmet when cycling in central London so I brought my nice lightweight Nutcase with me in my bag and popped it on before I began cycling
7. Bags? the bike has a bag holder with a bungee strap to secure it. I managed to get my Kate Sheridan handbag in there but you may require a rucksack or messenger bags if you have a lot to carry.

8. Adjust your seat- The saddle is easily adjustable and has a number system so you can remember which height works for you and off you go.
9. Gears and lights - The bike has 3 gears which are very easy to adjust on the right handle bar and there have automatic dynamo style lights.
10. Dock back in - by pushing the bike into an empty docking station, You don't need to put the key back in and please do ignore the funny noise... this is just the bike saying hello to the docking station apparently!

What a good idea! An (ebay like) auction site dedicated to bikes and bike accessories. Going Going Bike launched this week and to celebrate I was invited to launch party at Look Mum No hands. It was a great evening and I think the beginning of a successful business venture for the founders, James and Andrew.

Instead of the predictable drinks and chat, they had the rather fun idea to make the longest ever bike daisy chain. Not a serious record breaking challenge but it definitely added a buzz to the evening.
I have often wondered how many unused bikes there are in London. The Going Going Bike team have unearthed some statistics on the matter and apparently there are more than 1.5million unused bikes in London, with 200,000 abandoned in gardens – that’s almost enough bikes to make a line from London to Istanbul!
So if you do have an old bike, in need of some love. Dust it off, take a few snaps and get it up on Going Going Bike. Or if you are after a second hand bike yourself get bidding. I have already seen a rather nice ladies Peugeot on there.

The Cycle Hire Scheme lauches in 2 weeks!

I am terribly excited about the forthcoming London Cycle Hire Scheme. The official launch date is Fri 30th July and I, for one, can't wait. The Cycle Hire scheme will make my life a whole lot easier. My commute to the office is currently too far to cycle everyday (Chiswick to Old street) I did take my bike on the overground for a while but had to travel out of peak hours so that didn't really work. Once I am in in East London I usually have to do trips to our warehouse or meetings nearby and usually end up trying to borrow my colleague's bike or surrendering to the obvious... public transport. So for me it is going to be the ideal solution.
My Mum is equally as excited! She commutes into Euston and then has 20 minute walk to her office. She will soon be able to hop on a hire bike and cut her journey by a good 15 minutes.
And I'm pretty sure its not just me and my Mum who are going to benefit from the Cycle Hire scheme. I imagine there are thousands of people who live and work in London who will be able to jump on a bike as part of their day to day journeys.
There will be 400 docking stations all over central London, take a look at the Cycle Hire scheme area map for exact perimeters. The docking stations will be no more than 300m apart so you can always find one to fit in with your journey. TFL have invested millions in the scheme and have recently secured Barclays as the sponsor. The scheme is predicted to increase cycle journeys in London by 40,000 a day on top of the current 500,000 journeys a day.
I had a go on one of the bikes at last years Cycle show and they are very comfortable to ride. They maybe a bit heavier than the average city bike but they're a smooth ride and are a rather nice shiny blue colour. They also have a front carrier for your bag with a bungee straps attached to keep it secure.

A new cycle repair workshop has popped up in our neighourhood and our friend Matt has been down with his poorly bike to check it out...

There’s a new bike shop / juice bar in Shoreditch called cyclelab My bike badly needed a service so I booked it in on Friday. They took it on Monday rather than saying “come back in 2 weeks”, which was a good start. It got better: I was offered a free coffee, and the guys there are very friendly. The quote for a service (new chain, new cables, new brake pads and general sorting out) came to £90. On Monday afternoon I picked up my bike and the bill was for £78. The bike is running better than when I bought it. It’s the best service I’ve ever had. They’re a little independent shop, and I highly highly recommend them if you ever go anywhere near Shoreditch.

Our fave helmets for the summer: Nutcase

Each year we try and find a new helmet that makes us smile. In our first year it was the Bern helmets, last year it was the YAKKAYS and this summer we have the wonderful Nutcase helmets to shout about. My fave is the 'Jetson' style Starbright and we also have the stripey and dotty. These helmets are fully certified and feel light and comfortable to wear. A great practical feature is that they come with a series of padded linings that simply velcro to the inside of the helmet. This ensures that you wont have any sizing issues as you can simply select the right width padding to fit your head.
These are the perfect helmets if your just about to start cycling or are thinking about starting when the Cycle Hire scheme comes in as they are only £45, comfortable to wear and well ventilated.

Listen up Mum! The Bobike mini+ baby/child seat

I have finally found the perfect baby seat for my 14 month old daughter. She was probably ready from about 12 months but it has taken me a little while to do my research. My pre-requisites were something that feels safe for both Flo and I, doesn't cost more than my bike and looks reasonably nice on the bike.
My final choice which ticks all the boxes and more is the Bo Bike Mini+ front carrying child seat. I am so happy with it that we are now selling it and I was at the Wholefoods store in Kensington on Saturday showing parents how it works.
The first reason it receives my accolades is that I manged to attach it to my bike all by myself in about 20 mins, even with Flo crawling around and getting in the way. As someone who struggles with putting things together generally (travel cots, Ikea furniture all tend to turn me into a flustered, swearing wreck)I was chuffed that I actually enjoyed attaching the Bobike seat. It basically involves attaching a bracket to the handle bar stem and tightening the screws, you then push the seat through 2 holes in the bracket and then attaching the foot rests to fit the length of your child's legs.
The next selling point for me is that Flo loves it.As I took her and the seat for a testride she immediately felt at home, holding onto the middle of the handle bar singing away to herself.
It does takes a little bit getting used to the extra weight at the front - once your riding its fine but mounting & dismounting can initially feel a bit awkward. However after a few rides round the block I had got the knack. To avoid bumping into the back of the seat when getting going the key is to stay sitting in your saddle and adjust your pedals instead of coming out of the saddle.
The seat has an age range of 9 months to 3 years (or 15 kg) (Bobike do a full range for kids up to 10). And I think having them at the front of your bike when they are still pretty little is the ideal position. They not only have a great view of the world but it stops them from getting anxious at you having your back to them. It is also reassuring for the parent as they are in full view and you don't have the urge to keep turning round to check on them.
Next challenge is to find a suitable, small enough helmet....

Profile: Meli from Bikes and the City

Whilst in San Francisco I had the pleasure of catching up with Meli from fabulous blog Bikes and the city for a coffee. Her blog is packed with personality and gives you a real sense of Meli's adventures in this vibrant city with her trusted steed.

C: What bike do you ride?
M: My beautiful FRENCHIE! A vintage motobecane -ASTRA- model with 'Tour de France' decals from the mid 70's, made in France of course. I am only its second owner, and the bicycle was purchased in the city in the same decade.
Pretty much it is all original parts, with the exception of the fenders, basket and the usual wear/tear parts like tires and brake pads.

C: Why do you cycle?
M: Why not. SF is 7x7 miles and with so many things to see, it seems boring to be inside of any moving vehicle.

C: What’s the best thing about cycling in San Francisco?
M: The coffee, the bicycle encounters on the bike lane, the fog in your face, the cloudy cold weather in the summer (I think I stand alone on this one) the colors, and the hills. No one can say it is hard to bike to work, because on top of all 'barriers' we have hills. Mean ones. There are always too many things to do and too many things to see. Arts, drugs, hippies, bikes, money and silicon 2.0 nerds - you pick your hobbies and run with them.
San Francisco is so small that crossing 8 miles you can go from the Pacific Ocean to the Bay.

C: Do you think cycling amongst women is on the increase in the USA?
M: I have certainly seen a hike in San Francisco in the last 7 years I have biked. Which, is unlike many cities even in California. It is slowly happening, but women need more exposure and people need to know that there is more than a Lance face to the word 'cycling', and that it comes in regular clothes and cool slow bikes, around the states. We have seen this wonderful explosion of exposure, with the connections that we have all made via the blog/internet media, nationwide, a birth of the 'normal' people on bikes. Here we are now! HELLO :D

C: What’s your favourite outfit/style to cycle in?
M: I dress normally. I don't necessarily 'dress' to go on my bike I suppose. I love fashion, I love colors and I am not afraid to show my roots and culture through my clothes with wicked patterns, the biggest hoop earrings and crazy tights/leggings. But if I'm to get dressed, or shop for new clothes, I always do the invisible bicycle dance, just to make sure I can pedal OK.

Bicycle Portraits: Everyday South Africans and their bicycles, a photographic book in the making.
Although we tend to concentrate on cycle style, I am fascinated the diverse spectrum of people who use a bicycle and was drawn to to these images of very different types of south Africans and their bicycles.
The project has been started started by Stan Engelbrecht & Nick Grobler and they are looking for people to pledge through Kickstart.com to be able to put the book into production.
Sounds like a well worth cause and hopefully will become a beautiful book. For more details and wonderful images go to Bicycle Portraits. We wish them the best of luck with it.

Helen Pidd's Book: The Bicycle

Helen Pidd's new Book The Bicycle, published by Penguin, hits the shelves today. Its a great read and ideal if you are thinking about starting out on two wheels but are looking for some advice. Bicycle books can often be somewhat factual verging on dull so Helen's book is real breath of fresh air in that its funny, imaginative and highly relevant to the modern woman. We were at the launch party last night (cycling's schmoozy event of the year!) at London's new Cycling cafe Look Mum no Hands, to raise and toast and wish Helen (pictured) & Penguin all the best with the book.

Caz: Why do you cycle?
Christa: Many reasons - health, community, financial, fun - but I'm mainly interested in observing the urban environment. I'm most fascinated with sustainable urban design and cycling is my favorite way to explore Livable Cities.

Caz: What's the best thing about cycling in Santa Barbara?
Christa: It's sunny almost every day in Santa Barbara. There are some beautiful bike paths along the ocean. It's stunning! Also, since it's a small town, I love seeing friends and familiar faces while cycling. It's easy to stop and have a conversation.

Caz:Have you noticed a rise in women cycling in Santa Barbara?
Christa: Compared with many North American cities, Santa Barbara has a high cycling rate, but there is a growing bicycle culture. I see more women cyclists on a variety of practical urban bicycles including electric and Dutch bikes.

Caz: What's your favourite outfit to cycle in?
Christa: I enjoy cycling in classic dresses and heels. Lately, I've been wearing a lovely straw hat and it's just tight enough so that it won't fly off while cycling.

Sun and Cycles in Santa Barbara

Apologies for the lack of posts over the last week. I have been battling with jet lag since my return from California and this is the first evening I am have managed to stay awake after 7pm. Although missing the perpetual blue sky's it is nice to be back in London even if it is a little grey.
Our last week in the US was spent in Santa Barbara were I was lucky enough to get involved in the Santa Barbara Cycle Chic show which was a great evening. Models and guests mingled for an hour or so before the show in the evening sunshine, drinking local beer and wine. It was such a lovely atmosphere without the pretence and preciousness that one sometimes encounters at fashion shows.
There were some beautiful bikes involved, from our old favourites Pashley to Electra and New York's Bowery lane Bicycles and of course great accessories from our new US online store and great local shop The Wheelhouse. It was full house and the army of models strutted (and cycled) their stuff with style. A few pics to give you feel of the evening.

Having blogged about cycling and women a fair amount, cycling and children is still unknown territory to me. Although my daughter is now one I have not yet got a child seat sorted and taken to the streets on my bike at 2 instead of 1.
However meeting Adrienne Johnson from San Francisco based blog, change your life ride a bike and cycling with her and two of her 4 kids gave me a so called 'kick up the ass!'
She made it look like a doddle and what more made it fun as she guided us through the streets with her son Declan on the back of her Dutch bike and 10 year old Una holding her own behind. I think a lot of people fear cycling with children but Adrienne is an example of someone who has mastered the art and reaps the benefits in her life.

Quick Q and A with Adrienne on her & bicycles and where she gets all the energy from...

Caz: What bike do you ride?
Adrienne: A 2007 Batavus Socorro. It is called "the Bat" and is also known as my "land yacht" unless it has just fallen on me and then it is called all kinds of things you probably do not want to print on your lovely blog.

C: Why do you cycle?
A: I could probably write a blog about that : ) I ride because it is the only way I have found to get from A to B that makes me feel better about myself.

C: What’s the best thing about cycling in your city?
A: San Francisco is tiny- 49 square miles and only 7 miles wide at its widest point. I see people I know all over the place all the time. Seeing friends and neighbors all over the City makes me feel grounded. That does not happen in my car- the best I can hope for when I drive is that I see a friend's cars pass by.

C:Do you think cycling amongst women is on the increase in USA?
A:I can't speak for the whole country. It is certainly on the rise in the SF Bay Area. I do not really focus on women and cycling vs just people and cycling. I get more excited about kids and people who are perceived as "disabled" being out on bikes for transportation. One thing I can say is "lady's bikes" or "bikes specially designed for women" turn me off. The marketing for them is horrid and it usually means a poor quality bike, at least here in the US. I rode 5000 miles last year, half of the time with a 45 lb child and groceries on it- I need a tank, not a "lady bike".

C: What’s your favourite outfit/style to cycle in?
A:Whatever I have on that day. I admit that my wardrobe has changed a bit since I started riding as my primary means of transportation- not my style so much as how my wardrobe functions. No super tight skirts (too hard to ride comfortably), no cotton sweaters (they get sweaty), no skinny jeans (I hate how tight denim feels when I am active)... To be honest, all of my favorite clothes have that designation because I can nap in them- no buttons, lots of stretch, no wrinkling.... funny that I occasionaly blog about cycle style. Ah well, those who can't do, teach. Can I just live in yoga clothes?

Caz: What bike do you ride?

Kristin: My most frequent ride is my Motobécane mixte - the bike I call Le Rouge et Noir. My friend Bike Man Ben just fixed it up with new handlebars and new pedals, so I'm much happier and more comfortable on this one now. I also just got a folding bike, the single speed KHS Latte. Doesn't go so fast, but it's very practical and super cute.

C: Why do you cycle?

K:Personally, I cycle because it's fun. I love the feeling of exhilaration you get when you're flowing along. I also love running into friends on the bike lane, which happens quite often in San Francisco. So it's very social, whether you're riding for fun or even commuting to work and back. I also know that I'm doing a great deed for the environment and my city by riding a bike.

C: What’s the best thing about cycling in San Francisco?

K: The best things about cycling in SF - because there are so many - are 1) the friends you make in our very active bicycle community, 2) all the great views to take in on the most simple of rides from point A to point B, and 3) all the little details you notice that you might not see if you're traveling by bus or car. Biking gives you a whole new perspective on the world and on your life.

C:Do you think cycling amongst women is on the increase in USA?

K: I do believe cycling among women is on the rise in the U.S. Though I can't quote any statistics, I feel like I see more women wearing normal street clothes and work clothes on their bikes going to work or play. I also know that I've met - both in the cybersphere and in person - more amazing and inspirational women who are committed to cycling through keeping up with my blog.

C: What’s your favourite outfit/style to cycle in?

K: My fave outfit? I will have to go with my Diane Von Furstenberg dresses. Everytime I wear one of her patterns and designs, I feel so uber-womanly! And then coupling that feeling with being on a bike brings the Wow! factor to a entirely new level. It's riding with confidence all the way to my destination!

Sunday Streets with a few stops along the way...

Yesterday my Pashely and I had the pleasure of joining some of San Francisco's best loved cycling bloggers for a day of leisurely cycling.
Velo Vogue's Kristin and Shelly from Riding Pretty and I met for morning coffee at cycling cafe Mojo. After our caffeine fix Kristin guided us through the city to the Bayview area for the Sunday Streets event. Its a fantstic initiative, basically every few weeks in the Spring/summer a certain ares of the city is blocked off to traffic and cyclists and pedestrians are King of the road.
Along the way we met up with Adrienne, author of Change your life, ride a bike, and her two kids and then stopped for a iced tea at the Oasis that is Flora Grub.
Thanks to the powers of the internet and the sociability of the cycling culture. I was able to come half way around the world, meet up withe lovely group of ladies and ride and chat in the Sunday sunshine... thanks guys!

Cycling the streets of San Fran

The last week has been somewhat of a whirlwind. I got married last Friday, which was wonderful and then it was on the plane with my husband and my little one to sunny San Francisco.

A couple of days in and having just about conquered my jet lag and got my bearings it was definitely time to get myself a bike and have a ride in this beautiful city.
Those lovely people at Pashley had arranged for me to pick up a pastel Blue Poppy from cooler than cool bike shop Citizen Chain. My challenge now was to cycle back to our apartment in Haight Ashbury. Now having never cycled in the States and only ever visited San Francisco once before I was a little nervous. It makes you realise how used to your local roads and route you get a commuting cyclist and when faced with a different city, a different road system it feels kinda daunting.

I acquired a cycle map from the San Francisco Cyclery, put my Pashley in the lowest gear possible (San Francisco has a lot of hills) and off I went. The roads feel much bigger and wider over here which initially made me feel quite vulnerable but following my map I soon found some great cycle lanes and began to gain confidence. I was also encouraged by my fellow cyclists, San Francisco has a really healthy cycling culture and there's nothing better than other cyclist on the roads to make you feel safe and proud to be on your bike.
I arrived back to meet Robert and Florence for a much needed early evening drink at our new local Magnolia. A great ending to an exhausting but wonderful week.

A Girls Guide to the Tweed ride

So ladies it is well and truly Tweed ride season, the London run is fast approaching (Sat 10th April)and there are forthcoming rides in Sacramento, San Francisco and New York. Have you got your outfits organised? If not here's a few pointers to get you suitably attired for the day.

Outerwear - A Tweed jackets or cape is essential and forms the basis for your outfit. The only exceptions ladies is if the weather is particularly clement then a simple shirt or blouse will suffice. I recommend having a hunt around the charity shops and vintage fairs. I picked up my Harris tweed hunting jacket, pictured above, from a vintage fair for £25, proving it doesn't have to be a costly purchase.

Outfit Accessories
A neck scarf is ideal to give your look a hint of femininity and catch the eye of those those Gentleman tweeders as you go by.
We also recommend a pair of Dashing Tweed legwarmers to add some flair to your overall outfit and to cover some leg for those of you wearing a shorter skirt. Be warned though girls to much leg on show may be a safety hazard as could take the tweeding chaps eyes off the road. Remember, less in more.
A pair of ankle spats can also keep your feet dry if it should rain during your ride.
You can bring a flash of colour to a neutral tweed outfit by sporting a cheerful bonnet or perhaps some brightly coloured hosiery.
Pipes, monocles and pocket watches can also enhance to your overall look.

Skirts or trousers
A Tweed skirt will give you an air of sophistication and elegance but you must ensure it is not too tight that it makes bicycling uncomfortable or awkward. Another option is a pair of plus fours, pictured above, ideal for cycling and teamed with a tweed jacket and brogues will look very smart. Jophurs and boots could also work for the Katherine Hepburn look.

Bike accessories
A Good pannier is a must, you may need to pack a picnic, hip flask and other essential items. We recommend the deluxe shopper, pictured above or the safari double.

Spring is my favourite season, I love the lighter evenings, warmer weather and the sense of hope before the disappointment of the British summer. Its also my favourite season for cycling. I firstly started cycling in London in spring and have lasting memories of cycling over the Albert bridge and looking over the Thames on a crisp, clear spring morning.
We always like to get some new exciting products up for spring, these are a few on my favourites...
We are always on the hunt for bags that are not cycling specific but work wonderfully on the bike so was delighted when I came across Kate Sheridan's collection at London fashion week last year. the barrel bag, goes across the shoulder - messenger bag style but is far more attractive and feminine than most messenger bags. And the vintage style rucksack is completely adorable and so comfortable to wear. Both are canvas with super-cute black cloud print and have real leather straps and trims.
We also have the rather smart handbag carrier. This is perfect you those of you who just like to leave the house, jump on your bike and go and not have to worry about too much paraphernalia. Its is really easy to attach to the handlebar stem and then you simply pull back the metal hinged frame and it locks your handbag in nice and securely. It positions your handbag between you and the handlebars so no one pinch it while your riding. I think Gucci and Mulberry would approve!

Flowery bike loveliness

I got a rather fun offer last year to style a Raleigh 20 for the company, Small wheel Good. The flowered-up Raleigh Twenty bicycle, pictured in the photos is a Cyclechic one off, created with loving care by Small Wheels Good. I chose an intricate, vintage style floral fabric and suggested the accessories and Simon Carter (the retro-velo-phile behind Small Wheels Good) brought the idea to life. With a couple of yards of daintily flowered cotton and lashings of secret-formula glue.

We decided to take the bike to the canal and take some snaps with our equally pretty model Coco. I really like these pics. There have great feeling of feminine spring time loveliness.

A bike fit for a Gentleman

The lovely people at Velorbis gave one of their devilishly handsome Churchill Balloon bikes to test-ride. Although I could appreciate its rugged charm from a far, we needed a fella to saddle up and give us the low down, so over our Cyclechic chap Matt Smith...

I’ve been riding the Velorbis Gentlemens’ Churchill Balloon, on and off for four months now. It’s on loan from Velorbis, and every so often it has to go off somewhere to be put on show, and I have to go back to my bog-standard hybrid bike, a perfectly good bike, functional, practical, cheap, but absolutely nothing special. Riding it gets you from A to B and I wouldn’t be able to think of a single other thing to say about it, other than it’s grey.

The Churchill Balloon by contrast, is about as far away from bog-standard as you can get. Riding it actually makes you feel different, somehow improved, enhanced, actually pretty cool. In real life I’m not a cool person at all: I have zero fashion sense, no individual style, I’m not flash by nature and to be honest I usually avoid doing anything that will make me stand out in the crowd. But when I ride around London Town on my Velorbis I get looked at, pointed at, talked to, admired, even revered. That is a pretty remarkable effect when you think about it, for what is after all only a bike (I’m not vain or stupid enough to think it has anything to do with me by the way). And it’s the main reason I love it and recommend it to all the people who stop me and ask me about it.

There are other, more concrete reasons why this bike is great. It feels smooth, solid, expensive. It’s got luxurious Brooks leather handles for instance, and a matching Brooks seat. The built in dynamo lights stay on for a while after you stop pedalling. It’s got a hook at the back you can hang your shopping on. It makes a lovely efficient whirring sound as it goes along, and although it’s heavy, it’s stable and easy to ride. It’s also strangely relaxing, the stresses and strains of busy city life just don’t seem to matter as much and you get a sort of detached-yet-incredibly-smug feeling as you cycle past all those mugs crammed miserably into yet another bendy bus at rush hour. And finally there are those big, thick, awesome Fat Frank tires which deserve pride of place in some design gallery.

Downsides? Well, it’s a bulky and frankly a bit of a pain in the arse to park and lock up, and lock it up you must or it’ll surely get nicked. And you really never want to be in a hurry on it, it just doesn’t do fast (I see this as a positive actually, but if you’re one of those people who’s always running late you’re in trouble).

Other than that, it’s splendid and whilst it’s not exactly cheap, it is remarkably good value for money. Highly highly recommended.

A Bicycle prize to get excited about...

Bicycle orientated prizes don't come much better than this. Radley (yes the company that make the cute bags with the scotty dog tags) have designed a limited edition beautiful leather pannier and, wait for it... are giving them away strapped to the back of a Pashley Sonnet along with divine recycle wool picnic blanket.

Cyclechic's little black book: Bells Bicycles, Hastings

We are always interested in new bike shops that have charm and originality so Bells Bicycles in Hastings is certainly ringing our bell. I visited Hastings a couple of years ago and although I was not particularly taken with the main town the Old town is fabulous. Lots of wonderful vintage and brick-a-brac shops and some really great old pubs and cosy chippys. I was therefore very excited to here about Bells bicycles launching in the vicinity.

"Founded and run by Meg Williams-O’Mara, a twenty four year old vintage bike enthusiast, the shop contains an ever-changing selection of bicycles. From the super fast fixed wheel track bikes of the 40’s, the ultra elegant Dutch loop frame of the 20’s to the very simple town bikes made in the 70’s/80’s.
