They're also uncomfortable and inconvenient; with a helmet I overheat in summer and I need more silly special stuff to avoid having my ears freeze in winter. They are the antithesis to the travelling freedom that is the essence of cycling. The figures don't even show that they work; helmet laws have stopped a lot of people cycling and have done nothing for head injury rates, see Robinson DL. No clear evidence from countries that have enforced the wearing of helmets.
