Heads up Mum

This poster was designed by  husband and wife team Britt and Wayne Hanson who together write the blog Fantastic Family Fun. Wayne was knocked off his bike by a van and wearing a helmet saved his life so the couple are understandably passionate and spreading the pro helmet word. The couple have noticed they often see adults carrying children on their bike and whilst the wee ones are safely helmeted up, the adult is not.
So why is this? I think sometime as parents we are so consumed with our child's well-being and all the associated bits and bobs that we spend less time thinking of our own. But of course the safety of our own heads is just as important to our little ones....

But you don't make cyclists safer by putting barriers in the way of people cycling!

Countries with high cycle helmet use: Australia, USA, Canada. Countries where nobody bothers with helmets for adults: Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands. I know which I'd prefer!

This is not a barrier to cycling. It's a helmet you wear to protect your head.

Please beware you don't end up making a regulatory rod for your own back on this topic. I can tell you that people still get killed on bicycles in New Zealand where we endure compulsory helmet use. It is not the panacea it appears!

In the Netherlands helmets aren't used that much (almost not at all). Recent studies shows that it is the mass of cyclists that helps bring down the casualties (*): eg: if car drivers aren't used to cyclist they won't pay attention when the drive. But here everybody knows to expect cyclists and that makes it safer.

(*) Of course more cyclist die if there are much more of them, but in total per mile it is less
